Please note the above theme isn't Paine's actual theme - I was having trouble finding it. It's called "International", from the International+Last Mission version of Final Fantasy X-2.

At first glance, Paine comes off as cold and sarcastic. She keeps her distance from people, emotionally and physically. She's often seen standing a few feet away from others during discussions and usually speaks only when spoken to. She keeps to herself, hiding her past, feelings, and thoughts away under a veil of detachment and sarcasm.

However, she isn't outright frosty. She can obviously care, and she isn't afraid to show it. She's naturally reserved, unlike a slew of other Square characters that go through traumatic child hoods. While I'm sure growing up was tough for her, right in the middle of Sin's carnage, and it definitely had to do with shaping who she is today, nothing was shown to indicate that it was a major factor in her later life. She's just naturally collected into herself and it's part of her personality to remain at a distance.

But don't mistake her silent exterior for unhappiness. Just as she keeps her negative emotions and thoughts quiet, she does the same for her positive side. Her happiness is just as rarely seen as her sadness. She even says herself that she is having fun with the Gullwings, even if it doesn't look like it. The often-insane antics of the Gullwings amuse her, and she enjoys their company. Even if they sometime drive her up the wall, her patience keeps her in check.

Paine's history is interwove with that of the three major political players on Spira: Baralai, Nooj, and Gippal. Through the game, their history is slowly revealed through the Crimson Spheres you collect throught the game. Find them all, it's important.

Paine joins the Gullwings in the hopes of finding an explanation for what exactly happened in the Den of Woe. She hoped to one day find a sphere that would explain her own past, which was so muddled and full of holes. She did not know why the Crusaders tried to kill she and the squad, and she did not know about Shuyin. Unlike most sphere hunters, who either want to gain fame and fortune or collect spheres of Spira's history, Paine's reasons for joining the Gullwings are personal.
